Turn Your Chatbot Into a Business: Usage-Based Billing, Caps & Paywalls with Stripe

Your chatbot can now earn its keep. With the redesigned Stripe metering, you can charge customers for exactly what they use, cap how much anyone can chat, and convert visitors into paying subscribers — right inside the conversation.

Everything is configured in Settings > Metering, in plain steps. Connect Stripe with one click, choose what you want (billing, usage limits, or both), pick your price, and save. Chat Data creates the product and pricing on your Stripe account for you.

What You Can Do Now

  • Charge for usage, automatically — Every reply your chatbot sends is reported to your Stripe account. Once a customer subscribes — through the in-chat subscribe button below, or a payment link you share — Stripe invoices them for their usage on the schedule you choose. Bill per message, or by message credits (so heavier AI models cost more). Chat Data never creates subscriptions on your customers' behalf: usage from customers who haven't subscribed yet is tracked but not billed, so turn on the paywall (or share your subscribe link) to make sure usage converts to revenue.
  • Choose your pricing style — A flat price per unit, a bundle (say, $15 per 1,000 credits), or volume tiers where the unit price drops as usage grows. Set your currency and tax behavior — no Stripe dashboard work needed.
  • Set usage limits — Give each customer their own allowance, or one shared allowance for the whole chatbot. Limits can reset daily, weekly, monthly, never, or in sync with each customer's own billing cycle. When someone hits the limit, the bot politely stops with your custom message.
  • Paywall the chat — If a visitor doesn't have an active subscription, the bot can reply with a subscribe card: your message plus a payment button that opens a pre-filled Stripe checkout. You choose when it appears — immediately, after a few free messages, or only when they hit their limit.
  • Give free samples — Give each identified customer N free messages per period before the subscribe prompt appears (visitors are matched to Stripe customers by the lead-form field you choose, so returning customers keep one shared allowance). A built-in freemium funnel, no code required.
  • Stay informed — Get an email when a customer crosses the warning thresholds you pick (25%, 50%, 75%, 80%, 90%, or 100% of their allowance) — and optionally warn the customer too, with your own email template and branding. And if Stripe starts rejecting your usage events (say, the meter was deleted or the connection was revoked) or a checkout link fails to generate, you get an alert email — at most one per day, so a broken pipeline never floods your inbox.

Ways People Use It

  • Agencies reselling chatbots — Build a bot for a client, connect your Stripe, and bill the client automatically for their monthly usage. No more manual invoices from usage spreadsheets.
  • Paid expert bots — Trained a bot on your specialized knowledge? Put it behind a subscription: visitors get a few free questions, then a subscribe button — Stripe handles payment, the bot unlocks instantly.
  • Pay-as-you-go support — Charge customers only for the support conversations they actually have, with volume discounts for heavy users.
  • Cost control without billing — Not selling anything? Use caps alone to make sure no single user (or the whole bot) burns through your message credits — with warning emails before anyone gets cut off.

Getting Started

  1. Open My Chatbots > [Chatbot] > Settings > Metering and connect your Stripe account (one-click OAuth).
  2. Pick your purpose: usage caps, billing, or both.
  3. Select the Stripe meter that records usage — create one in your Stripe dashboard under Billing > Meters, then hit Sync from Stripe and pick it.
  4. Choose how customers are identified — one fixed customer for the whole bot, or per-visitor from your chat lead form.
  5. Set your price and limits, and save — Chat Data creates the Product and Price on your Stripe account.
  6. Get your customers subscribed: enable Block & invite so unsubscribed visitors get a ready-to-pay checkout button in the chat, or share your own subscribe link. Stripe bills each customer's usage once they've subscribed.

The paywall card works on your website widget, streamed chat, and even realtime voice sessions — and on WhatsApp, Messenger, and other messaging channels the same message is delivered with the payment link as text.
